Authors’ Reading Month 2020
Authors’ Reading Month (ARM), which is the largest literary festival in Central Europe, was established in Brno in 2000 and over time spread to other cities: in 2011, to Ostrava; a year later to Wroclaw and Košice; and, most recently, to Lviv, in 2015. The programme of the festival has a dual focus: the first is domestic, i.e., the literature of the host countries; the second is the literature of the country that is awarded the title of ‘Guest of Honour’ in that particular year.
Authors’ Reading Month (ARM) traditionally opens on 1 July in Brno and then moves continuously from one host city to another for thirty-one days. The main programme offers two author readings a day: representatives of the guest-of-honour country and the host country. During the month, at least sixty-two writers are featured in each city. In total, there are over three hundred author readings, plus another accompanying programme. All readings can be viewed live online.
The festival covers a number of other activities, for example, new translations are published through the ARM Library book series, and a film is produced featuring portraits of writers from the guest-of-honour country, and so on.
In 2020, the guest-of-honour country of the festival was Hungary.
