scene of contemporary themes and unexpected forms
An artistic movement whose origins date back to the second half of the 1960s. Since 1967 it has brought together theatre artists, writers, musicians and visual artists for whom art is a way of life and artistic creation a privilege.
The poetics of this theatre/movement is characterized by its emphasis on developing a unique heritage of so-called irregular dramaturgy, the power of imagination and shared physicality.
Its work is based on freedom of expression, openness to dialogue and plurality of opinion, and through its productions it has long sought to spread these values and cultivate Central European civil society.
In January 2019, award-winning Czech director Anna Davidová became the artistic director of the Husa na provázku Theatre, bringing with her a number of new collaborators, including dramaturgs Kateřina Menclerová and Martin Sládeček.
Martin Sládeček replaced her as artistic director at the end of the 2020/21 season. The artistic conception that they are developing together at the Zelný trh (Cabbage market) emphasises an uncompromising dramaturgy of contemporary themes and fresh material. An important aspect of the programme is also opening up the theatre to diverse aesthetics and audience groups.
Immediately after his arrival, the new artistic management invited a number of prominent personalities of Czech and Slovak directing to collaborate with them, including Jiří Havelka, Kamila Polívková, Jan Mikulášek, Ondrej Spišák, Petr Erbes and Boris Jedinák.
Today, the Husa na provázku Theatre occupies a unique place on the European theatre map and its award-winning productions are regular guests at festivals in the Czech Republic and abroad.
